Tally — Privacy Policy
Effective 9 June 2026
Tally is a career app for rotational maritime workers — it helps you track rotations,
earnings, certificates, documents, notes and expenses, find work, and stay in touch
with people through messaging and calls. This policy explains what we collect, why,
who we share it with, and the choices you have. By using Tally you agree to this policy.
Information we collect
- Account & profile. When you sign in with Google or Apple we receive your
email address and basic profile (name, profile photo where provided). You may add a role,
nationality, avatar and, if you use the connect feature, a handle and phone number.
- Content you create. Rotations, daily rate and earnings, expenses,
notes, documents, certificates, meetings, job applications, messages, voice messages
and any photos or files you attach. This is stored so it syncs across your devices.
- Location. Only while you are using the app, and only if you allow it,
to log where a rotation takes place and to place you on the maritime map. Tally does
not track your location in the background.
- Camera, photos & microphone. Used only for the actions you take:
scanning certificates, attaching photos/files, recording voice messages, and voice or
video calls. Tally accesses these only when you use those features.
- Contacts (only if you use Find Crew). If you choose to find people you
already know, Tally reads your device contacts and converts each phone number and email
into a one-way scrambled code on your device. Only these codes are sent to us — your
contacts' real names, numbers and emails never leave your phone. See
“Finding people you know” below.
- Notifications. A device push token so we can send you message and
call alerts, plus your device platform (iOS/Android).
- Basic diagnostics. Limited technical information needed to keep the
app working (e.g. error conditions). Tally does not run third-party advertising or
analytics trackers.
How we use your information
- To provide the app's features and sync your data across your devices.
- To deliver message and incoming-call notifications.
- To connect calls and deliver messages between you and people you choose to contact.
- To show relevant job listings.
- To maintain security and the reliable operation of the service.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Messages and calls
Messages and voice messages are stored in our backend so they sync and are delivered to
the people in the conversation. Voice and video calls are connected directly between
participants (peer-to-peer); call media is not stored. People you message or connect with
can see your profile information (such as your name and photo).
Finding people you know
Tally has an optional feature that suggests people you may already know. It runs only if
you open it and grant contacts permission. When it runs, Tally reads the phone numbers and
email addresses in your device contacts and immediately converts each one into a one-way
scrambled code (a SHA-256 hash) on your device. Only these codes — never
the real names, numbers or email addresses — are sent to our server, where they are
compared against the codes of existing Tally users to suggest matches. We store these codes,
linked to your account, so your suggestions stay up to date; they are removed if you delete
your account. The codes cannot be reversed back into your contacts, and your address book is
never uploaded, stored, or shared.
Service providers we share data with
We use a small number of trusted providers strictly to operate Tally:
- Supabase — secure database, authentication and file storage for your account and content.
- Expo — delivery of push notifications.
- Apple Push Notification service (iOS) and Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (Android) — to deliver notifications to your device.
- Google and Apple — to authenticate your sign-in.
- Adzuna — to provide job search listings.
These providers process data only to provide their service to Tally and under their own privacy and security terms.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete specific content
it is removed from active systems. If you delete your account, your associated personal
data is deleted (some information may persist briefly in routine backups before being
overwritten).
Security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with our backend provider's
access controls. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take
reasonable measures to protect your information.
Your rights and choices
- You can review and edit your profile and content in the app at any time.
- You can revoke camera, photo, microphone, location or notification permissions in your device settings.
- You can delete your account and all associated data directly in the app, under Profile → Delete account. You can also request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by contacting us at the email below.
Children
Tally is intended for working professionals and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new effective date.
